Carve-out & IT separation
A PE-owned pharma group had to carve out 8 of 32 production sites across Europe — IT had been badly neglected in the carve-out contract, a second carve-out was running in parallel, and a data centre had to be replaced. As interim PMO, I assessed 180 IT services, steered 91 actions up to the closure date, negotiated 41 key assumptions after escalation and adapted 54 TSA documents. Result: a 350m EUR carve-out was put back on track, major disputes were mitigated, and a stand-alone target operating model was launched.
Post-merger integration
The industry’s No. 2 in pharma logistics had acquired the No. 3 (both PE-owned) — two IT worlds that had fought each other for decades now had to cooperate. IT system failures threatened liquidity, with customer losses and contractual penalties looming. As interim CIO (operations), I worked through 210 action fields and established an IT operating model for 17 storage sites, an IT target operating model and a new leadership model. Result: major incidents down from 18 to 1 per quarter (€720k/quarter), critical-infrastructure outages to 0 — and the loss of key personnel stopped.
IT turnaround
A PE-owned mechanical-engineering group had aligned its IT for years to excessive IT security rather than market and cost needs; a shadow IT had emerged, and after a change on the board the IT split into camps and key staff left. As fractional interim CIO, I brought IT leadership and the board back together, repositioned the role of IT, made existing collaboration tools mandatory and created the contractual basis for cloud services. Result: the loss of key personnel was stopped, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central was prepared for day 1, and the stalled O365/M365 project was brought onto the home straight.
Digital transformation
A group specialising in occupational medicine and safety was losing tenders because digital processes, IT security and interfaces were not met; high technical debt, outdated systems and unprofessional IT management made things worse. As CIO, I built customer platforms for key accounts, digitalised internal and external collaboration, moved business processes to the cloud in a legally compliant way and restructured IT to be service-oriented. Result: the business kept running through the pandemic, at least €3.5m was saved on low-return projects (ROI raised to ≥ 200% in year one) and €150k/year of operating costs was cut.
